One thing I wish you will elaborate on is the remark about Black people being more likely to do violent crimes. I know you did not mean it the way I first read it, but others may wonder about it as well. Maybe it’s just my feeble 75 yo mind messing with my ability to comprehend things, but just thought I’d give a heads up 😁. I can’t wait to read the full report and send it to others.
Thanks Connie! What I meant in the line mentioning Black people is that they are arrested at a higher rate and sentenced to more time, but it sounds like it left a different impression. I'm going to revise it to make it more clear. THANK YOU! And you are right on the ADOC salaries. WTF!
I'd not a couple of things. Katherine Robertson says out loud what I have been muttering to friends, that "Department of Corrections" is a misnomer. It should be called the "Department of Punishment." No effort is made to "correct" bad behavior but every effort is made to insure suffering.
My friends in Chicago referred to the cops most often sued for constitutional violations as "repeater beaters." They noted that no record is kept about which cops were accused in internal affairs complaints, so the result was that every complaint was considered in isolation. Since the vast majority were the cop's word against the victims, complaints ended up not being sustained, despite there having been multiple complaints of the same behavior by the same cops previously. ADOC doesn't even have that excuse.
The fact that these repeater beaters are promoted rather than disciplined exacerbates the biggest problem with police abuse. Those guards who don't engage in abusive behavior are dissuaded from reporting their abusive colleagues. There has always been a code of silence among police and those who break it suffer retaliation for doing so (viz. Serpico) and that's just when departments ignore complaints. It's that much worse when they reward the worst offenders.
