"And the more I think about it, maybe that minus on my review was actually a plus. I mean, who wants to be perfect?" Amen. Spent a year of my life recently on a project I cared about, and I'm proud of the work. Proof I was doing good work came just this week in the form of a critical letter from a known curmudgeon in the "Sound Off" section of letters to the editor in the local paper. The emails and phone calls of support since then have been great.
I enjoy your work and always love seeing something new posted from you! I’m self-employed, too and I never meshed well with being managed by others. Those reviews- yikes. Always some underlying hostility or unreasonable disappointment. It’s a risk to make oneself more public but can be so exciting too. Looking forward to your podcast :)!
Press on Beth. As you say, no one is perfect but I think you're doing great. I used to work with Navy SEALs...one of their tricks to survive (whether in combat or facing tough supervisors) was to tell themselves to press on, one step at a time...make it to lunch, make it to dinner...make it to bed. And, trust me, keep doing what you're doing and you will definitely have some great days...when you will not want the day to end. And, thank you for what you do.
Beth, thank you for sharing this. I love what you wrote. I'm sorry for the TV trolls... there will always be the naysayers and assholes. But there will also always be supporters, like me. I also relate to having performance reviews at soul-crushing full-time jobs and feeling like I was never good enough at what I was doing.
I am super excited to listen to your podcast. I was riveted by the one about Jacob Wideman (Violation) and am so grateful for these types of podcasts to get the word out about the injustice in our criminal and prison system. You're my hero. :)
I can honestly say I love reading every article you write! It’s truth , heartfelt and you back it up with evidence that you yourself dig for! I’d rather read your articles any day than watch media telling a story that they know isn’t true but do what they are told anyway! Your stories definitely make a difference in lives and you are definitely where God wants you to be! You got this! Thank you and blessings in all that you do!
Unfortunately, we have been programmed to people please by a society that overemphasizes appearance- especially women’s.
Stay strong. You are fighting the good fight. I respect your work, greatly.
Thank you Cat!

Consider this a comment of support!
I would love a link to your project to check it out! And YES on getting a critical letter printed in the paper. That means you are doing your job!
https://johnlovie.substack.com/t/pfas are my posts on it so far. Big wrapup post to come.
Thanks!

Thanks so much, Claire! I'm adding Violation to my list. I haven't listened to it! Thanks for the recommendation!
I wrote about it, in case you wanna read it! 🤓 The podcast is soooo good and so heartbreaking. https://open.substack.com/pub/storiesaboutmybro/p/im-obsessed-with-violations-podcast?r=1qlfqj&utm_medium=ios&utm_campaign=post
